What is bitter melon ?

Bitter melon or bitter gourd is a tropical and subtropical vine plant. Its botanical name is Momordica Charantia, and it belongs to Cucurbitaceae or melon family of plants. It resembles a cucumber but with a bumpy skin. Bitter melon is yellow-green in color, but it turns into yellow-orange as it ripens. The inside of the bitter melon has many fibrous seeds. As the history of this fruit is not known, many botanists say that bitter melon is a native of the tropics.
